Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy
for spider veins, sclerotherapy is the preferred method of treatment. The two types of veins sclerotherapy is used on are– uncomplicated spider veins (very small varicose veins less than 1mm in diameter) and uncomplicated small varicose veins know as reticular veins (1mm to 3mm in diameter).
In this simple procedure, the patient's leg veins are marked in preparation for treatment. Standing accentuates the veins. The veins are injected with a sclerosant, (solution or foam) through a tiny, ultra fine needle. The solution irritates the lining of the vessel, causing it to stick together which causes them to close and thereby fade from view. The procedure may also remedy the bothersome symptoms associated with spider veins, including lower extremity aching, burning, swelling and night cramps. The treatment only eliminates abnormal veins that are no longer used, so there are only positive effects on blood circulation.
Although significant improvement may be seen within days of treatment, maximum results are evident at approximately 2 months following treatment. Compression stockings should be worn 24 hours per day for 1 week following treatment to maximize results. High-impact activities, hot baths or saunas, and long plane rides should be avoided for several days after the procedure. Otherwise, there is no downtime and patients can resume normal activity immediately after the treatment.
Most patients enjoy 50-70 percent improvement with each treatment. The average patient undergoes two or three treatments before achieving his or her therapeutic goals. Potential side effects include temporary staining (hyper-pigmentation) and tiny blood clots in the treated veins. Rarely, ulcerations can occur at the injections site.
