ENDOVENOUS ABLATION

Most patients with varicose veins have refluxing veins that can be sealed off using a minimally invasive procedure called endovenous ablation. Through a small incision (less than 1/4"), the vein to be treated is accessed and a catheter is advanced under ultrasound guidance along the veins entire length.

At Premier we use two different methods of endovenous ablation ~ laser and cyanoacrylate ashesive. also known as Venaseal. for laser ablation, the laser is turned on and slowly pulled backward out of the vein, sealing it off as it goes. In a similar process Veneseal is applied through a catheter along the length of the target vein. After your ablation is complete, the blood traveling in the sealed off vein is then naturally re-routed by the body to other healthy veins in the legs. This technique is safe and extremely effective.

The choice between the two procedures depends on a number of factors. Dr. Valiga will discuss these with you and select the best option for your concerns.

Most procedures carry a risk, for these venous treatments are minimal. Complication may include allergic reaction, bleeding, blood clots, ulceration, infection, or non-closure of the vein.

You will be required to wear a compression stocking for at least a week possibly more after the procedure. An ultrasound will be done 1-2 weeks after the procedure.

COMMON USES OF PROCEDURE

Doctors may use this procedure for cosmetic purposes. However, it is more often used to help ease symptoms such as:

  • aching or throbbing pain
  • leg heaviness/fatigue
  • swelling
  • skin irritation or sores
  • skin discoloration
  • painful swelling of the veins
