Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure used to eliminate varicose veins and spider veins through the injection of a solution directly into the vein. The solution causes the vein to scar, forcing the blood the reroute. The collapsed vein is then reabsorbed into local tissue and eventually fades. Treated veins may fade within a few weeks, but it may take a month or more for full results. Several treatments may be needed.
The procedure does not typically require anesthesia or special preparation. During the treatment, the person lies on their back with their legs up. The area will be cleaned, and a small needle will be inserted into the vein. The person may feel burning, tingling, or even nothing at all. In most cases, follow-up treatment will be needed to collapse a vein fully. With several varicose veins, multiple treatments may be the only way to get rid of them. After treatment, the person should remain active to prevent blood clots. Avoid sunlight to prevent dark spots from forming on the treated area.
Some may experience side effects that occur at the site of the injection, including bruising, small skin sores, raised red areas, multiple tiny red blood vessels, or darkened skin in the form of lines or spots.
Varicose veins most commonly develop on the legs and feet. The veins that are affected may be discolored, raised, or swollen. Some are deeper under the skin and can cause discomfort. Spider veins are smaller, closer to the surface, and can appear blue, purple, or red. Depending on the size of the damaged veins, sclerotherapy can treat varicose and spider veins in the thighs, ankles, calves, feet, face, and anus.
