There are various factors that contribute to dry skin, from weather to eczema. Dry skin can itch, crack, flake, and even bleed. It is annoying, uncomfortable, and sometimes painful, but Premier Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery is here to help with tips for maintaining moisturized skin.
Lotions can be very irritating to the skin. Therefore it is best to use creams or ointments with moisturizing oils. Natural oils for dry skin that we recommend are maracuja oil, argan oil, olive oil, jojoba oil, and coconut oil. Shea butter is also quite moisturizing along with lactic acid, urea, hyaluronic acid, dimethicone, glycerin, lanolin, mineral oil, and petrolatum.
Skincare products can contain harsh ingredients that can cause and/or irritate dry skin. Go for gentle, unscented products that are designed for sensitive skin. Products such as soap, body wash, face wash, toner, and moisturizers can contain various drying ingredients such as alcohol, fragrance, retinoids, or alpha-hydroxy acid. We also recommend using hypoallergenic products and unscented laundry detergent. When our skin is dry and raw, even clothes and laundry detergent can be irritating.
Creams and ointments should be applied immediately after washing. Doing so immediately locks in all the moisture from your shower before your skin dries. Moisturize a few minutes after a shower, bath, or washing your hands or face to trap in that much-needed moisture. Don’t forget your lips! Premier Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery recommends using a non-irritating lip balm as needed.
It is important to read your product labels to make sure your products are non-comedogenic and gentle on your skin. Remember to avoid fragrances and hydrate after washing your body, face, and hands.
