Causes of Hair Loss

Hair loss, also called alopecia, can occur in both men and women. It can be caused by genetics, age or a change in medication and hormones. It occurs when the cycle of hair growth is disrupted or when a hair follicle is destroyed and replaced by scar tissue. There are about 80 million men and women who are currently suffering from hair loss, and there are great treatments to stop it.

Symptoms

There are multiple reasons why someone may begin to lose their hair. It can happen gradually or all at once. It also doesn’t just happen on the scalp, it can affect other parts of the body. While some loss may be temporary, others can be permanent. The most common symptoms are:

  • Gradual thinning – This is the most common type of hair loss and it occurs on top of the head.
  • Patchy bald spots – This can occur on the scalp or other places such as the beard and they are coin shaped spots.
  • Loosening of hair – Brought on by an emotional or physical shock, this hair loss is identified by clumps of hair coming out at a time.
  • Full body hair loss – Not as common, this hair loss is usually a result from chemotherapy and the hair will grow back.
  • Scaling – This occurs along the scalp and can cause broken hair, redness and swelling

Causes

Genetics is the most common factor when it comes to hair loss. This is called male or female-patterned baldness and it occurs gradually. Another cause may be a hormonal change brought on by a medicine or pregnancy. Any stressful or traumatic event can cause hair loss to occur. Other common causes may be age, a medical condition such as cancer or a significant weight loss. Each cause can impact the hair differently, and the American Academy of Dermatology provides detailed information.
